As someone who smoked for 30 years I got to thinking if I could go back in time to my 16 year old self would have grabbed that cigarette and started what would be a three decade love hate relationship. Oddly but truthfully the answer is… yes.
I consider myself one of the lucky ones, I “got away with it”. When my breathing started to become laboured and my skin was changing to be an ashen colour I realised the game was up and I had to stop.
Thinking back to first cigarette, I remember a time when you could smoke in pubs and clubs with your friends and those were good times. When you had a pack with the branding on it . you were cool if you smoked Camels or Marlboro cherries. Perhaps it was not the cigarettes but the company, the optimism of youth. Either way I look back with fondness on the cigarettes. I am 7 years clean and still miss them but I can’t go back.
“Quitting was an appalling experience”
Going cold turkey is brutal and unpleasant and it took me lots of what I would call proper attempts before I managed to quit. Each time I thought I had them beat the nicotine craving would come as would the excuses why I needed to grab for a cigarette.
I remember when electronic cigarettes first landed on our shores. I bought lots of them because I still had a need. I had given up cigarettes but my hands were busy looking for a smoke to hold. I was amazed when I first tried an electronic cigarette. Even those early incarnations were so much better than what was on offer before. Even then it was obvious that the game was up for traditional smoking. If I had stock in tobacco companies I would have dumped it the day I saw the first electronic cigarette.
The thing is this…. It seems to work. Electronic cigarettes in all their forms are taken up by more people and is more successful than all other forms of stop smoking aids.
As always, things evolve over time and this is the same with the reduced risk product market.
Reduced Risk products get better and better in terms of both technology, aesthetics and quality of taste and nicotine delivery .
Giving up smoking or switching from traditional cigarettes has never been easier than it is today and the excuses for not giving up are diminishing as the experience provided by devices like the IQOS so closely mimic traditional smoking that really … Why wouldn’t you …
